We do not yet have a general reopening date or schedule for the Visitor Center, but we will post the few, intermittent days we will be open above until a firm reopening schedule is established. The main parking lot will reopen daily to the public starting Saturday October 2nd, from 10am to pm, including access to the restrooms and vending machines during the same hours. The observatory is more than 20 miles from downtown San Jose along Mt. Hamilton Road at an elevation of 4, feet. The road follows a gradual grade laid out over a century ago for horses and carts. We are on Mt. Lick Observatory is committed to the education of the next generation of astronomers. Education of the general public is also a key component of Lick Observatory activities. While the telescopes were saved, a great deal of damage to infrastructure, staff residences, and outbuildings was dealt to the Mount Hamilton facility. We are working on providing the opportunity for Public Evening Tours and Photography Nights , these work well for smaller groups, making them much easier to safely facilitate for our staff and visitors under our current limitations due to COVID safety precautions and on-going SCU Lightning Complex Fire recovery work.
