They've always mimed on TOTP. That's what annoys me most about Westlife. They generally sing ballads, which are generally vocally easy to sing live, so to mime is very poor. To tell if they're miming, just listen to a CD perfect performance, and 'over the top' lip movements.
When bands are miming, they go over the top and open their mouths much wider than you would naturally. No, they definately sang live a few times! They have achieved success through a massive fanbase of adoring teenage girls - predominately - and releasing singles - in general - where noone else is challenging them particularly for their weaker singles.
I have to be honest, and IMO, a couple of them have turned really ugly - a matter of opinion, I know - but the girls still love them all to bits, and there seems to be no end to the career of Westlife. About them singing live - I think they sang live at last year's Brits - didn't they? They started off on a slow version of "Uptown Girl" which must either have been live or prerecorded especially for the event.
