Tuesday at the Board of Supervisors meeting, the Irvine Company deeded over 29 acres of land to the County of Orange, marking the first step towards reopening Irvine Lake.
Once a consensus is reached, the County is willing to resume recreational activities at the largest, most sought-after lake in Orange County. Source: OCGov. However, it is against the law to enter the lake and there are posted signs prohibiting entry. Fremont and Black Star are part of the Irvine Open Space Preserve and these guided tours take you along trails overlooking the lake. The mud run trails also overlook Irvine Lake.
It is a man-made lake which can store approximately 28, acres of water. Santiago Creek feeds the lake and features a rustic scenery, beautiful mountains, steep rocky cliffs, shallow coves, deep creek channels, submerged high spots and overhanging trees.
In the past Irvine Lake provided an excellent fishing and family park environment. Beyond fishing visitors could hike, mountain bike, picnic and much more. For over 70 years Irvine Lake has been a great fishing and camping location for residents across Southern California.
Kids often caught their very first fish at the Kids Lagoon, and scouts and Indian Guides camped on the shore. The lake featured the annual Villa Park Family Picnic, and the site of many reunions, festivals and family outings. However, there is no contact allowed with the lake anywhere. Swimming, water-skiing or jet-skis were not allowed. Private boats, kayaks, float tubes and canoes were allowed until the insurance restrictions were put in place. Irvine Park has provided a safe, fun place for locals to spend a sunny SoCal weekend for over years.
It was established as the first public park in California in , when James Irvine Jr. Listed since on the National Registry of Historic Places, Irvine Park still offers the natural beauty and historic oak trees of its past, as well as some more modern additions. Within its well-maintained acres, you can find an unmatched variety of amenities to keep the entire family happy. No matter what sport you prefer, chances are Irvine Park has a place for you to play it.
Four first-come, first-served softball fields are among the most popular offerings, as well as horseshoe pits. Volleyball poles in several areas are available for players who come prepared with their own net.
Paddleboats can be rented from the Wheel Fun Rentals shack for a leisurely cruise. The shack also offers bike rentals including cruisers, tandems, single surreys, and more for exploring paved and dirt biking trails throughout the park.
Several mostly novice-friendly hiking trails provide beautiful views of the natural environment, which is home to some of the oldest live Oaks in Orange County. Shaded overlooks on the Horseshoe Trail offer serene vistas.
To top it all off, a three mile equestrian trail lines the park for scenic, relaxed horseback riding, and guided tours and riding lessons from Country Trails, Inc.
Access to the lake begins at 7 a. Do not line up on Santiago Canyon Road prior. It is unsafe, and you will be subject to all applicable traffic laws. Friday-Sunday 7 AM-4 PM Parking lot opens at 7 AM Please be sure to follow the guidelines set when attending the Lake: At the start of each day, and 4 times during the day, we will clean and sanitize the tackle shop with disinfectant.
Getting Here E. Five fish limit. Bass is catch-and-release only. Catfish larger than 24 inches must be released. One rod per person maximum. Approved baits only worms, mackerel, dough baits, or artificial lure. No live bait allowed. Bass catch-and-release , catfish, carp, bluegill, crappie and sturgeon are in the lake.
