We're just playing a game. The found footage cinematography is very good with one glaring exception that pervades the whole film. The majority of Paranormal Activity 3 takes place in VHS cameras of that era film in aspect ratio, yet Paranormal Activity 3 is shot exclusively in widescreen aspect ratio.
Paranormal Activity 3 is the third film in a major theatrically released Hollywood franchise. In order to appeal to the broadest possible audience and look aesthetically pleasing on a large screen, shooting in aspect ratio was more likely a business decision rather than a preferred creative direction.
Setting aside this one digression, the found footage cinematography is exceptional. Dennis is a professional wedding videographer and has a full editing studio in his garage. As such, he is expected to have a strong knowledge on cinematography and can readily access the equipment needed to film. All of the footage captured using handheld video cameras is professionally done as is to be expected from a professional videographer. Some footage is also captured by his assistant Randy Dustin Ingram , which is also professionally done.
This unique camera mount enables Dennis to film a large area of the first floor of his house using a single camera. Further, the panning motion of the camera adds tension as viewers eagerly wait to see what will come into view as the camera sweeps across the room. Paranormal Activity 3 stays true to the unique trope of including a low-pitched humming sound to video whenever a paranormal event is imminent.
As mentioned in reviews of the first two Paranormal Activity films, the humming sound puts viewers on alert that something is going to happen. The found footage purity in Paranormal Activity 3 is very good. The video captured throughout the film is convincing as actual footage that could have conceivably been found and subsequently stitched together as a feature film. The film uses CGI very sparingly and subtly, ensuring Paranormal Activity 3 maintains its found footage conceit.
Further, similar to its predecessors, the third installment in the franchise forgoes an opening title card, helping to carry the illusion of actual found footage. The acting in Paranormal Activity 3 is very good and even, as is the case with each of the Paranormal Activity films in the franchise. Christopher Nicholas Smith as Dennis performs exceptionally as the main protagonist, concerned father, protective husband, and inquisitive filmmaker.
