The best place to do that is, of course, the beach. Bring family, friends and neighbors together to enjoy a good old-fashioned beach barbecue. Robert Moses has a designated barbecuing area on the opposite side of the dunes from the ocean, between the pitch and putt golf course and the parking lot of Field 2.
Relax and chat with friends at a picnic table and take in the smoky scent of burgers on the grill. Barbecuing is available at Jones Beach at Fields 5 and 10, in designated areas similar to those at Robert Moses.
If you choose to stay the path of the 2 mile long boardwalk the new multi-use path extends from the boardwalk at Field 1 to the West End area of the park for an additional 2. Visitors who are fond of swimming in the Ocean can do so at several locations staffed by the Jones Beach Lifeguard Corps. Zach's Bay provides a more calm-water swimming experience for small children; also watched over by able lifeguards.
Wild Play Adventure Course: This new adventure course offers zip lines, aerial adventures, and a 40 ft jump. The wheelchair is available for use at no charge on a first come, first serve basis. Please check with the lifeguards at the beach for availability. Birders and those seeking a quieter experience can watch for sea birds, such as Oystercatchers, Terns, Skimmers, Northern Harrier Hawks, Plovers, Brants, Gulls, and many more. Children can collect shells along the seashore and often encounter large horseshoe crabs.
A pleasant pastime is a long, leisurely walk on the beach to the east or west of the central part of the park, where few other people will be encountered.
Current Water Quality - Beach Results. Most New York State Parks charge a vehicle use fee to enter the facility. Fees vary by location and season. A list of entry fees and other park use fees is available below. The beachfront is lifeguarded, equipped with bathrooms, and access is totally free. Plus, the village is packed with shops and fresh seafood restaurants, all within walking distance from the beach. Families should swing by the large shipwreck-themed Magnolia Boulevard playground just off the beach. If you're looking for an overnight beach getaway, Allegria Hotel , the only luxury oceanfront hotel in the area—right on the boardwalk, is a fun and easy option. On the bay side west of Wantagh State Parkway and north of Bay Parkway is Field 10, a fishing station with a network of piers for anglers.
The western tip of the island overlooks Jones Inlet. On the bay side is the boat basin, U. Coast Guard Station and state parks police station. The West End area has a shorter boardwalk of its own and is where the Holiday Light Spectacular is held. Drivers destined for Jones Beach can take Wantagh or Meadowbrook parkways south to the junction with Ocean Parkway and follow the signs to the field of their choice. On the bay side is The Surf Shack, a flip-flop coastal kitchen for casual dining with a tiki bar under real palm trees, and The Boat Yard waterfront bar and grill featuring a variety of dining options. They are open to 11 p. There is no public transportation to points east of Jones Beach State Park.
Immediately east of Tobay and just over the Suffolk line are two of three residential communities that dot Jones Beach Island. The first is the strictly residential West Gilgo Beach, a gated community where only residents and their guests are allowed. Bunger Surf also runs a small shop and surf school there.
